Some Say Love Supreme is the best record that Coltrane ever made, for me, it’s Giant Steps. I love it because it shows clearly how 'Trane was evolving as an artist, pushing the boundaries of Bop and crafting his own sound. I like art that shows process, and this record clearly does.
Brian Eno/Harold Budd - Pavilion of Dreams
A revelation when I first heard this, it combines a level of subtlety and complexity in a purposeful quiet space. It has been on repeat and used as a true meditative portal for decades. For me, this is the record that all other Ambient recordings are judged against.
Fela Annikulapo Kuti & Africa 70 - Water No Get Enemy
Continues to fill dancefloors for me worldwide. Its groove, strength, and sheer funkiness showcases the talent of Fela, his lead drummer, Tony Allen, and the whole Africa 70 band in a 11 minute epic that builds and takes you on trip to Lagos in the mid 70’s where the music starts at 2:00 am and stops at noon the next day.
Ceśaria Évora - Miss Perfumado
Originally recorded in 1992 and released in 95. This record brought Cesaria to global stardom. She started singing in a Orphanage Choir and carried her beautiful voice and presence to stages worldwide. This record combines both the ever-present lament in Cape Verdean music with a confidence that is her own.
Ali Farka Touré with Ry Cooder - Talking Timbaktu
In the Music Space of World Music certain genres bubble up and become global hits. For Desert Blues its been a very long run with many amazing artists. The first arguably was Ali Farka Toure, whose signature guitar playing and voice was a template for others to follow. On this record he collaborates with Ry Cooder, who brought us The Buena Vista Social Club, on a sublime work that brought the Sahara to the world.

This record was a explosion of creativity and purpose that shook Hip Hop to its foundation and made the whole world recognize the Public Enemy was the most important band of its time.
Ornette Coleman - The Shape Of Jazz To Come
This record shattered conventional ideas in Jazz music and opened up the genre to radical experimentation that it’s still trying to come to terms with. In listening, it feels like the songs shouldn’t work, but they do in very inspiring and emotionally complex ways. Each track is brilliant and has been referenced as a deep inspiration by artists from all over the musical landscape, especially Peace and Lonely Woman.

Claude Debussy was an immensely influential composer whose musical ideas made modern music. Nocturnes is especially wonderful in its complexity and emotion. This record showcases how through time and experience together a orchestra can create true sonic magic.
The Beatles - Rubber Soul
My favorite Beatles Record. The first of theirs that was focused as a full record instead of just singles. It flows so well and was a huge influence on every band after its release. Its also the first that combines Rock, Soul, Folk into a cohesive idea by the band. Its always nearby my turntable
Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On
The record I go back to as a reference on how to make a piece of art that truly speaks to a time and place. It’s a global piece that I’ve DJ’d in clubs worldwide with the same effect. Love and hope.
