The Latin Alternative Music Conference gathered artists, music business professionals and fans for 5 days in New York City to learn, share and enjoy the Latin music industry. Well-known figures of the alternative scene as well as tons of fresh acts were represented in the form of new projects and emerging musical flavors through live shows, acoustic sets, panels and intimate and surprising musical encounters. KEXP’s El Sonido team visited NYC for the 20th anniversary celebration of LAMC 2019 and wants to share 10 of our favorite moments.
One of our favorite live performances was at the Summer Stage located in Central Park when the Barcelona-based Argentine singer and MC Nathy Peluso opened the first day of shows with a fiery and fun live set featuring both some of her well-known and new tracks. After a deserved ovation for her brief, but powerful performance we recommend this song:
On the same Central Park stage that Nathy Peluso tore up Wednesday evening the Puerto Rican singer iLe climbed up to share a handful of songs from Ilevitable and the most recent Almadura, her two albums from her solo career after the break taken by Calle 13. Her impeccable performance also had direct references to the government of the island that is currently involved in requests for the resignation of governor Ricky Rosselló.

DJ Chilly participated in this panel with colleagues from the scene: AJ Alvarez (Symphonic Distribution), Fofito (La Respuesta), Bruno Del Granado (CAA), Jorge Gimeno (Sony Spain), Polo Montalvo (manager Residente, iLe, Jorge Drexler), Manuel Moran (Live Nation) in which they discussed the keys to success and challenges facing Latin artists and music in Spanish while traversing the live music scene in the diverse markets of The United States.
The band born in La Plata, Argentina, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, were the closing act of the LAMC and demonstrated why they’re one of the best current indie rock bands en español. After a new European tour and another one about to begin in Latin America and the interior of Argentina, El Mató played some of their most recent hits included in their acclaimed album La Síntesis O'Konor.
Though not part of the official LAMC showcases the Friday night party at Remezcla headquarters featured a great look into some of the fresh Latin Urban sounds from the U.S. with performances and DJ sets from GioBulla, Ms Nina, Nino Augustine, Tatiana Hazel and more. Along with artists that we already champion on El Sonido, the LAMC is a great way to discover new artists that were under our radar. Here’s four new favorites:
ENTROPICA: Chilean electropop project.
DOGOS: Indie rock outfit from Puerto Rico that just released their new single "Limítrofes."
CAMPO-FORMIO: Post punk / power trio from Puerto Rico.
AMANDITITITA: Founder of the Mexican Anarcumbia, social chronicles in song format.
We were lucky to witness the return to the stage from one of the legends of Argentine national rock. León Gieco got on stage to play live after a 5 year hiatus. This was LAMC’s first collaboration with Argentine festival Cosquín Rock and took place outside, under the bridge at Queensbridge Park. Gieco reviewed the decades of Argentine rock and its exponents, explained to the public some of the most difficult episodes in the history of the South American country and sang some of his hits. The line up of Cosquín Rock USA was completed with Silvina Moreno, Kevin Johansen and Juan Ingaramo.
One of our favorite bands of Colombia is in the United States as part of their Buitres tour sharing their music on some the main stages of the country. We recommend the song "Oro" and the video that was recorded completely on Super 8 film in multiple locations in northern Mexico.
After their live KEXP session from Trans Musicales in France, the band of Latinos based in Europe spoke with El Sonido and performed live at the Sounds From Spain showcase.
The most important duo of alternative music in Colombia and winners of the Best Alternative Music Album at the 2018 Latin Grammys for Claroscura, Aterciopelados led the Colombian delegation at LAMC as self-defined "strange" artists in a climate overshadowed by urban rhythms and reggaeton. In addition, Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago will bring the group for a highly anticipated show in Seattle on July 24th at El Corazón.

KEXP Seattle, de la mano del equipo de El Sonido, fue parte del XX aniversario de LAMC 2019 y te comparte su bitácora con 10 momentos claves.
Una de nuestras performances en vivo preferidas fue en el Summer Stage ubicado en el Central Park cuando la argentina radicada en Barcelona bajo el nombre de Nathy Peluso abrió la primera jornada de shows con sus principales y recientes éxitos. En el mismo escenario que Nathy Peluso dejaba caliente una tarde de verano en NYC, la puertorriqueña Ile se subía para compartir un puñado de canciones de Ilevitable y el reciente Almadura, sus dos álbumes en su carrera solista tras la pausa tomada por Calle 13. Su impecable actuación contó además con directas referencias al gobierno actual de la isla que por estos días se ve envuelto en pedidos de renuncia hacia quien es el actual gobernador, Ricky Rosselló.

Fuimos protagonistas del regreso a los escenarios de una de las leyendas del rock nacional argentino. León Gieco volvió a tocar en vivo después de 5 años y fue en la primera edición del festival nacido en Argentina, Cosquín Rock, que desembarcó en el QueensBridge de la mano del 20 aniversario de LAMC. Gieco repaso las décadas del rock argentino y sus exponentes, explicó al público algunos de los episodios más difíciles de la historia del país sudamericano y cantó algunos de sus hits. Una de nuestras bandas preferidas de Colombia se encuentra en los Estados Unidos en el marco de su gira BUITRES compartiendo su música en los principales escenarios del país. Después de su sesión en KEXP en vivo desde Trans Musicales, Francia, la banda de latinos con base en Europa hizo su parada en los 20 años de LAMC.
El dúo más importante de la música alternativa de Colombia y ganadores del Grammy Latino 2018 a Mejor Álbum de Música Alternativa por Claroscura, encabezó la comitiva colombiana en LAMC autodefinidos como artistas “raros” en un presente eclipsado por los ritmos urbanos y el reggueton. Ademas, el grupo de Andrea Echeverri y Héctor Buitrago anticipó un show histórico de Aterciopelados en la ciudad de Seattle para el próximo 24 de julio en El Corazón.
