KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is El Shirota on Friday, March 1 at 3 PM PST/5 PM CST.
El Shirota is a band originally from Chiluca, Mexico, who, during the last five years, has managed to position themselves as one of the most interesting musical proposals inside of the panorama of independent music in Mexico. Both their recordings and live act have been a topic of conversation in specialized media and radio programs throughout his musical career in the country.
Shortly after 7 months or so from their last release El Shirota, the rock outfit from México are ready to release a new track called "Carreta Furacão".
KEXP reached out to El Shirota to get their take on Mexico's music scene and the Latin music they're loving right now.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
El Shirota: The independent music scene of our city is bizarre. There are lots of quality projects in all genres. One curious thing is that due to the little money involved in the same scene, we consider that Mexico is a country with an incredible purity to make music. A lot of active artists in our city, make art, first and foremost, for the love of music. This is clear in the lack of money in our industry and the impetus of all those bands that cling to continue believing in their work.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
Without a doubt, Rosalía's latest album is a clear example of this rupture, led by an incredible and visionary producer like El Guincho. They have shown to our entire Latin music community that it is possible to transcend the international plane by clinging to the Spanish language and figuring as a world reference in today's music without geographical limits. Undoubtedly, both Latin America and all Spanish-speaking countries have tons of musical proposals of the size of any other international artist and it is great that this is managing to stand out beyond their countries of origin, like any other project in the United States, England, or any country in Europe or other continents.
What three Latin bands would you recommend our listeners and readers check out?
KEXP viajará por primera vez al centro musical latinoamericano de Ciudad de México para registrar lo mejor de la escena actual de este país azteca del 26 al 1 de marzo. Algunas de estas bandas forman parte del line up de Nrmal, el festival local que este año cumplirá su primera década y nosotros, lo celebraremos con esta alianza musical junto a ellos y a Panoram Studios.
Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas al aire a 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a El Shirota quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.
El shirota es una banda originaria de Chiluca, Estado de México, que durante los últimos 5 años ha logrado posicionarse como una de las propuestas musicales más interesantes dentro del panorama de la música independiente en México. A 7 meses desde su último lanzamiento, El Shirota (ESH002), el grupo de rock de México lanzó una nueva canción llamada "Carreta Furacão".
KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
El Shirota: La escena musical independiente de nuestra ciudad es bizarra, hay montones de proyectos de calidad de todos los géneros. Una cosa curiosa es que debido al poco dinero que hay involucrado en la misma escena, consideramos que México es un país con una pureza increíble para hacer música. Una gran cantidad de artistas activos en nuestra ciudad, hacen arte, primero y antes que nada, por amor a la música. Esto es claro en la falta de dinero en nuestra industria y el ímpetu de todas aquellas bandas que se aferran a seguir creyendo en su trabajo.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos.
Sin duda el último álbum de Rosalía es un claro ejemplo de esta ruptura, de la mano de un increíble y visionario productor como El Guincho. Ellos han demostrado a toda nuestra comunidad musical latina que es posible trascender al plano internacional aferrándose al idioma español y figurando como un referente mundial de la música actual sin límites geográficos. Es indudable que tanto Latinoamérica como todos los países de habla hispana, tienen toneladas de propuestas musicales de la talla de cualquier otro artista internacional y es grandioso que esto esté logrando sobresalir más allá de sus países de origen, como cualquier otro proyecto de los Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, o cualquier país de Europa u otros continentes.
