KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Hello Seahorse! on March 1 at 12:30 PM PST/2:30 PM CST.
Hello Seahorse! is a Mexican alternative pop band formed in 2005 in Mexico City. Hello Seahorse's early releases featured lyrics in both English and Spanish, and often with surrealistic or nonsense themes. They've released six studio albums over the course of their career and have been nominated for multiple Grammy awards. Hello Seahorse! has shared stages with bands like the Beastie Boys, Jarvis Cocker, and The Killers.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
Hello Seahorse!: Mexico has always been a country with a great musical offer. The independent scene has been growing very large steps in recent years. The biggest challenge presented by the scene is the exhibition of new projects and bands that seek to stand out from a growing offer. Fortunately, there are many media and ears that are attentive in the Mexican music scene. The proximity to the United States has also been a great advantage to expand the exposure of independent music in Mexico.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
I think that the language barrier could be considered less and less as a barrier. Recently there have been many artists who freely combine Spanish with English or any other language. It is very difficult to catalog music today as Latin American or Hispanic. I think we are at a point, or very close, to be able to say with certainty that music has no geographical limits nor does it belong specifically to a region.
What three Latin bands would you recommend our listeners and readers check out?

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
Hello Seahorse: México siempre ha sido un país de una gran oferta musical. La escena independiente ha ido creciendo a pasos muy grandes en los últimos años. El reto más grande que presenta la escena es la exposición de proyectos y bandas nuevas que buscan sobresalir entre una oferta cada vez mayor. Afortunadamente existen muchos medios y oídos que están atentos en la escena musical de México. La cercanía con Estados Unidos ha sido también una gran ventaja para agrandar la exposición de la música independiente de México.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos?
Creo que la barrera del lenguaje se podría considerar cada vez menos como barrera. Recientemente han sonado muchos artistas que combinan libremente el español con el inglés o cualquier otro lenguaje. Es muy difícil catalogar la música hoy como latinoamericana o hispana. Creo que estamos en un punto, o muy cerca, de poder decir con seguridad que la música no tiene límites geográficos ni pertenece específicamente a una región.
