KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Celest on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 3:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM CST.
Celest is an independent band from Mexico City. Started by Jerónimo Quintana, Florencia Quinteros, Jerónimo Hill, and Roderic Picard. Their sound is a mix of dream pop, ambient, and alternative rock. In 2017, they debuted with their first EP, entitled Noches de Huracán. Their first single, "Ghosts" was included in the soundtrack of the Mexican film Camino a Marte, directed by Humberto Hinojosa, being the song of the final credits and the official song trailer for which they won the Silver Goddess for Best Song Original. Their name comes from the fascination for the sky, the cosmos, and the color of the sea. It is a musical project that emerges from the playful practice of male and female voices.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
Celest: We are very proud and happy to be part of the current independent music scene in Mexico. The land has been fertile for many years for a new music eruption and is being seen. Mexico has an important musical history; Starting from the pre-Hispanic music to the folklore that was born from the conquest, it is very difficult not to transfer some of that to the music that is made in Mexico.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
The access that exists today to more music through platforms like Spotify or Apple Music puts at the hand of everyone, music from all over the world. This has helped music to globalize and Latin music has a boom because it represents many countries. There is a lot of variety of music in Spanish, so people who start exploring in the Latin world, most of the time find something they like.
What three Latin bands would you recommend our listeners and readers check out?

Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas al aire a 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a Celest quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
Celest: Estamos muy orgullosos y felices formar parte de la actual escena musical independiente en México. El terreno ha sido fértil durante muchos años para una erupción de música nueva y se está viendo. México tiene una historia musical importante; partiendo de la música prehispánica, hasta el folklore que nació a partir de la conquista, es muy difícil que no se transfiera algo de éso a la música que se hace en México.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos.
El acceso que existe hoy a más música por medio de plataformas como Spotify o Apple Music pone a la mano de todos, música de todo el mundo. Esto ha ayudado a que la música se globalice y que la música latina tenga un auge pues representa muchos países. Hay mucha variedad de música en español, entonces la gente que se pone a explorar en el mundo latino, la mayoría de las veces encuentra algo que les gusta.
