Somewhere along the way, The True Loves became a Seattle institution. And really, it feels pre-destined to be. The eight-piece soul outfit has been making joyous noise since they were performing with renowned vocalist Grace Love. Since breaking out on their own and continuing as an instrumental act, they’ve continued to be arbiters of soul to the local music scene with their sensational live performances and last year’s endlessly grooving LP Famous Last Words. The band is preparing to release a new 7-inch featuring the a-side “The Dapper Derp,” a track we’ve been playing frequently here at KEXP. Today the band shares the hypnotic b-side “Kabuki.”
The track inches into view with swirling organ tones and distant chops of the guitar before bellowing horns swoop in from below. The song continues to build, amassing intensity and a deeper sense of mystery as it continues to unfurl. You might not even notice your body succumbing to the rhythm, compulsively rocking to the driving beat and thrilling horn harmonies. It’s an encapsulation of everything that makes the True Loves great – a vivid, musical journey that consumes everyone within its soulful path.
