After closing out this weekend’s Sub Pop 30th anniversary celebration at Alki Beach, it appears that Father John Misty is already back at work. Today the project helmed by Josh Tillman released two new songs as a part of the Spotify Singles series. The first comes with a new rendition of the single “Mr. Tillman” from the group’s latest album God’s Favorite Customer. And man, what a twist this is. The acoustic guitars are replaced with synthesizers and drum machines, sounding as close we might ever get to a chiptune Father John Misty release (jk, I could totally imagine Father John Misty putting out a double album of Gameboy bangerrs).
The second song is a whiplash in the complete opposite direction with a lovely, intimate cover of Gillian Welch’s “Everything Is Free” from her 2001 album Time. The song finds Misty primarily performing solo, accompanied with only an acoustic guitar. Droning keyboards and harmonies later appear, slowly emerging as the track unravels.
