Sufjan Stevens has announced that his label Asthmatic Kitty Records will pressing his 2006 album The Avalanche to vinyl for the first time. The album was originally released as a companion album of outtakes from his 2005 record Illinois. Alongside the announcement, Stevens shared a Super 8-footage video shot by Stevens and edited by Deborah Johnson for Avalanche track, “The Vivian Girls Are Visited In the Night By Saint Dargarius and His Squadron of Benevolent Butterflies.” The double LPs will be pressed in a special colored edition, with the first in “Hatchback Orange,” and the second LP in “Avalanche White.” The edition is limited to 10,000 units and will be released August 31, with pre-orders available now. Gorillaz released their sixth studio album, The Now Now, a few weeks ago. Today, the Damon Albarn-led band has received two new remixes of The Now Now early single, “Humility.” One comes from German producer DJ Koze, who released Knock Knock in May, the other comes from UK collective Superorganism who released their self-titled debut in March. The latter version comes with a video directed by Jamie Hewlett that features Superorganism frontwoman Orono alongside the animated Gorillaz members. [ Pitchfork ]
Metric has returned with their first new music in three years today. “Dark Saturday” is a guitar-driven single, harkening back to their Fantasies days. Metric’s last album was 2015’s Pagans In Vegas, which saw the band go in a more synth-driven direction. Since then, frontwoman Emily Haines has been busy making music with Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton as well as contributing to Broken Social Scene’s 2017 album Hug Of Thunder. Tonight, Metric embarks on a lengthy arena tour with Smashing Pumpkins, which includes a stop at the Key Arena on Friday, August 24. [ Noisey ]
Indie pop duo Cults are the latest to join Turntable Kitchen’s Sounds Delicious series, following the likes of Benjamin Gibbard, Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Yumi Zouma, Pure Bathing Culture, and many more in covering another artist’s album in full. Cults chose the Motels’ 1979 self-titled debut. In a lengthy statement about the album, Cults explained their choice: “We found out about The Motels about seven years ago, when we were on tour with an amazing band called Total Control in Australia. We thought it was the greatest band name ever and later found out through googling that it was based off a song that came out in 1979 and was a big hit here and down under. After listening to it dozens and dozens of times we starting covering it to help lengthen our set (we had only one 33 minute album at the time!) and to pay homage to what we felt was a kindred spirit.” Cults released their third album, Offering, last year. Lord Huron recently stopped by the Spotify studios to record a couple of tracks, one being a cover of Neil Young’s seminal song “Harvest Moon.” While they may join the long list of artists who have taken on the track, they may be the band that makes the most sense. Frontman Ben Schneider’s vocals sound eerily close to Young’s while the band’s spaghetti western sound easily melds into Young’s trademark landscape. They also performed a live version of “When the Night Is Over,” off of this year’s Vide Noir. The band have announced that they will be performing on The Late Late Show with James Corden on August 8 and on CBS This Morning: Saturday Sessions on August 11. [ Under the Radar ]
