Today marks the first day of spring, which in theory means the thawing of the cold and rebirth of things lost. But in Seattle, spring slowly crawls back into view after pushing through a few more cloudy days and rain showers. It's something that local legend Lady Krishna knows well and encapsulates in her new song, "Black River of Love," from her upcoming album Cosmic Panties out April 27. Krishna is a proclaimed "punk guru" and fixture in Capitol Hill, performing in glam rock bands and leading meditation sessions at 8 Limbs Yoga. If there's anyone who can tap into the power of Seattle seasons and recontexualize it through song, it's her. Krishna shares her thoughts on the song's conception, emojis and all, saying, "The song is about betrayal 🌸 A breakup 💘 my love of the film Orpheus 🌸 & the renewal of life when it becomes spring time."
While the opening sounds of looming piano notes and twangy guitar drawls that open the song might not sound like glow of spring many are used to, it remembers a crucial aspect of rebirth – death. Death of the relationships that have held you back, death of feelings you can't bare to hold, and death to the past. "Into the void, that's where you like it best," she sings over a droning, gothic organ. Her voice is steady and stoic, nonplussed as if she's embodying Death from Orpheus. Before the sunlight can come and the flowers can bloom again, you have to bleed out the volatileness of the past. Stream the track below.
