Last night, Death Cab for Cutie surprised the audience during their show at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre by playing Transatlanticism in its entirety. The album was released on October 7, 2003, 15 years ago yesterday. In the shared setlist, the Seattle band started off songs off their latest album Thank You For Today before diving into playing Transatlanticism from front to back. “It’s been a really important record for us,” Ben Gibbard told the crowd to introduce the performance. According to setlist.fm, it marked the first time Death Cab have performed several of the album’s songs in five years. They then ended the set with a mix of hits from their other albums.

In 2013, around the 10 year anniversary of the album, Death Cab played Transatlanticism in full during their set at Bumbershoot. The band is currently on tour behind last month’s Thank You For Today. Recently, Ben Gibbard stopped by KEXP to play a solo set, taking audience requests from his entire catalog. Watch that performance below, as well as clips from last night’s show.
