  • Indie veterans Yo La Tengo have announced a new album slated for release in March called There's a Riot Going On. In a press release written by writer and critic Luc Santé, the album title is an intentional nod to Sly and the Family Stone's 1971 album of the same name, as well as a remark on the current ominous state of the world, saying: “While there’s a riot going on, Yo La Tengo will remind you what it’s like to dream.” The album was made solely by Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew of the band with no outside engineer besides John McEntire, who later mixed the album. The band has shared four songs off the 15-track LP: "Out of the Pool," "She May, She Might," "Shades of Blue," and "You Are Here." They've also announced a tour, with two nights in Seattle on Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1, both at the Neptune. There's a Riot Going On is out March 16 via Matador Records. [ Under the Radar ]
  • Chicago indie quartet The Sea and Cake are back with their first album in 6 years, Any Day, to be released this spring. Today they've shared the lead single and title track "Any Day," a beautifully graceful re-introduction to the band. The 10-track album will be out May 11 via Thrill Jockey and features flute and clarinet from Brian Wilson collaborator Paul Von Mertens.  The new LP follows up 2012's Runner. A tour of the U.S. and Europe is in the works and an announcement will be forthcoming. [ Pitchfork ]
  • San Diego punk outfit Hot Snakes are returning with their long-awaited follow-up to 2004's Audit in Progress and their first album on Sub Pop, Jericho Sirens. They've previewed the new album with the ripper "Six Wave Hold-Down." Jericho Sirens will be the first since the band's break up in 2005. Co-founder John Reis said in a statement: "So many people kept sending me letters and voicemail messages, asking me at the dry cleaners, or the butcher shop to bring back Hot Snakes.” Jericho Sirens is out March 16 via Sub Pop, with a limited Loser Edition LP available on black vinyl. • Berlin via Oakland artist The Soft Moon (aka Luis Vasquez) is releasing Criminal early next month and today he gave us the third single off the album, "Choke." The throbbing industrial track follows the same vein as the previous singles "Burn" and "It Kills," with its dark, grimy undertones and feels exactly like a night out in Berlin. Criminal is out February 2 on Sacred Bones. The Soft Moon will play the Crocodile on Saturday, April 7. [ Stereogum ]
