Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Fly As I Dare” by Shredders from the album Dangerous Jumps on Doomtree Records.

Shredders – Fly As I Dare (MP3)

At the end of their 2015 All Hands tour, famed Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree decided to take a short break, allowing each respective member of the group to work on their own projects. And while Dessa was contributing the killer track “Congratulations”  to The Hamilton Mixtape, and Cecil Otter made the electrifying EP Dear Echo, rappers P.O.S and Sims, and beatmakers Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger banded together to form Shredders, an excitable, energetic rogues gallery of breezy underground Minnesota rap.

“Fly As I Dare," with its apocalyptic backing track, sounds irresistibly hyped, with P.O.S’ and Sims’ easy flow and whip-smart delivery elevating the track as the MCs juggle topics ranging from Archer, hanging at the beach and dying alone. It's a stressful world, the MCs warn us, but they're still maintaining their cool and doing the Twin Cities proud.

Shredders are playing Chop Suey tonight with Astronautalis. If you can't make it out you can still keep up with them via their Bandcamp and watch the video for their smoking hot ”Xanthrax” below.
