Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “Fourth of Julivar's” by Tomo Nakayama from the 2017 album Pieces of Sky self-released via Ricebelly Music.
Tomo Nakayama - Fourth of Julivar's (MP3)
From the chamber pop of his old band Grand Hallway to the folkier side of his solo work, local artist Tomo Nakayama has been soothing Seattle with his beautiful songs since 2007. His latest album features what very well may be his most beautiful work to date, particularly today's Song of the Day. It's the first LP he's produced and mixed almost entirely on his own in his home studio. Special guests on the release include Yuuki Matthews of The Shins, who played keyboards and co-mixed a track, and Alex Guy from Led To Sea who lent his talents on violin and viola. The intimacy and comfort of home come across in each song. And to add to that feeling of community and warmth, the release was funded by friends and fans via Kickstarter. He writes on their site, "I wrote these songs to find comfort and peace during dark times, and to find a sense of purpose in my life. I hope it can do the same for you." Rest assured, Tomo -- they do.
Earlier this year, KEXP was fortunate enough to premiere the video for "Fourth of Julivar's" -- if you missed its debut, you can read more about the clip below here. Tomo has a very special show coming up on Saturday, October 7th at 20/20 Cycle, playing with revered local folk artist Michael Hurley and Australian singer/songwriter Darren Hanlon. Keep up with all the latest via his Facebook and Twitter.
