Grant Hart, drummer and co-founder of the influential punk trio Hüsker Dü, has passed away at the age of 56. His wife, Brigid McGough, confirmed to NPR that he died Wednesday night at the University of Minnesota Medical Center of complications from liver cancer and hepatitis. On Facebook, his former bandmate Bob Mould writes "Grant Hart was a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician. Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember." (Read Mould's full post below.) Earlier this year, Chicago-based label Numero Group announced the release of Savage Young Dü, a 69-track Hüsker Dü box set (4LP or 3CD) due November 10th. The collection took seven years to compile, featuring remasters from sound board tapes, session masters, and demos captured between 1979 and 1982; 47 previously unreleased tracks; a completely alternate version of their Land Speed Record live album, and a hardbound book featuring 40 previously unpublished photographs. Hart is survived by McGough, and a son, Karl. Below, watch a KEXP in-studio session with Hart from 2011.
