Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “Television” by Yakima duo Planes on Paper from their self-released cassingle released earlier this month.
Planes on Paper – Television (MP3)
When was the last time you let yourself be quiet and still? Every day our screens are filled with new atrocities and fears, from checking our phones when we wake up to the evening briefings on TV recapping all the horrors we got push notifications for throughout the afternoon. Finding time to take a moment to immerse yourself in something beautiful and soul cleansing can be hard. Planes on Paper's "Television" is worth cutting out three and a half minute of your time to take a breath and find a moment of calm amidst the fray.
The Yakima folk duo, comprised of Navid Eliot and Jen Borst, don't need much to get their vision across — just an acoustic guitar and two vocals harmonizing with each other. Their voices intertwining, holding each other close, is complete sonic comfort. Even as they sing of a life with the TV always on and lamenting "where you get your news from," the very things you may be trying to escape, their voices come in like a clear conscience giving you support and guidance. Find some time away from the world with a pair of headphones and let Eliot and Borst pull you away, if only just for a few minutes.
Planes and Paper play The Crocodile on Thursday, August 24th with Tall Tall Trees and Ritchie Young of Loch Lomond. In the meantime, you can keep up with the band by following them on Facebook and Twitter. You can also check out the official music video for "Television" below.
If you've ever seen Seattle's Naked Giants live, you know just how passionate and rabid they can be. Even the drummer can barely contain himself to his throne while the trio is churning out furious, excitable riffs. They feel like they were born to be wild, which is why they're the perfect fit cove…
