Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Meet Me In The Street” by Sheer Mag from the 2017 album Need To Feel Your Love on Wilsuns Recording Company.
Sheer Mag - Meet Me In The Street (MP3)
After a series of self-released EPs, Philadelphia-based hard rockers Sheer Mag have wasted no time unleashing their debut full-length, a fantastic set of '70s-influenced fun, combining the heavy riffs of AC/DC, the in-your-face snarl of The Runaways, and the twin-guitar Camaro-blasting sounds of Thin Lizzy. (In fact, frontwoman Tina Halladay has a tattoo of Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott on her thigh.)
Yet behind the high-octane fist-pumping songs lies an unexpected political perspective. Today's Song of the Day was actually inspired by the violence that ensued in Washington, D.C. during Donald Trump's inauguration. In an interview with Rolling Stone, guitarist Matt Palmer remembers, "We all went to Inauguration Day in D.C. We saw the crazy bullshit with the black bloc – people throwing rocks and bricks at cops, and the cops shooting teargas grenades back at them." Halladay's howl of "When we walk together, it feels alright" takes on a whole new meaning.
Sheer Mag bring the noise on Tuesday, September 26th at Chop Suey. Keep track of the band via their website and Facebook, and check out a video for another track from the new album below:
