KEXP Suggests: StrummerJam 2017 8/1-8/31

KEXP listeners know: we love The Clash. We love them so much, we declared February 7th to be International Clash Day, a holiday not only to celebrate their influential punk rock sound but to acknowledge the band's activism and political messaging.

Over at The Joe Strummer Foundation, a similar mission is upheld. Founded in 2002 shortly after the passing of Clash frontman and guitarist Joe Strummer, the organization strives to "give opportunities to musicians and support to projects around the world that create empowerment through music."

One of these opportunities is the month-long event StrummerJam which kicks off today, Tuesday, August 1st. In typical Joe Strummer-fashion, it's a DIY affair. Musicians, venues, promoters and music fans can organize a StrummerJam by registering via the website. Every StrummerJam will be visible on an interactive world map, where visitors can see all the events in a world view or zoom right into street level.

And, again, in the spirit of The Clash, event organizers can choose the beneficiary of their fundraiser, whether it's a local non-profit of to the Joe Strummer Foundation itself. As the foundation put it, "StrummerJam is a way to keep Joe's flame burning bright the world over."
