Beach Fossils - This Year (MP3)Since their 2010 debut LP, Beach Fossils have quietly carved out a niche for themselves as a modern melding of the styles of kiwi pop (see: The Clean, The Bats) and dream pop (see: The Clientele). On Beach Fossils's third full-length album, Somersault, the band reaches new heights in terms of songwriting clarity and maturity, their trademark hazed-out sound ebbing and flowing alongside collaborators like Slowdive's Rachel Goswell and Cities Aviv. "This Year," today's Song of the Day Podcast, in particular finds Beach Fossils waxing nostalgic about past years, joined by an articulate, soaring string section which further strengthens the material.
"This Year" begins with softly jangling guitars, singer/primary songwriter Dustin Payseur's voice sounding out amidst the haze. On the track's chorus, Payseur sings "No, I won't be there in time" as if with a knowing sigh, the track's gorgeous melancholy mirroring his words.
