Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a song as a part of out Song of the Day Podcast subscription. This podcast features KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that out DJ's think you should hear. Today's song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Oh Oh," by Shout Out Louds, a 2017 single on Merge Records.
The Shout Out Louds - Oh Oh (MP3)Shout Out Louds hailed from Stockholm in 2001 with an indie pop guitar sound that put them on stages with the likes of Magic Numbers, Essex Green and The Strokes. From their debut onward their sound evolved from sunnier guitar indie to a more darkly textural synth sound. They didn't stay long, with their following three records returning to indie lushness you can hear in This is the texture and context which now brings us "Oh Oh," a welcome return to form for the band.
Long time fans should be happy with the return, which sees the bands signatures rolling alongside the sonic vision of Adam Olenius' solo EP. Technically still associated with the band at the time, Olenius shifted energies in 2016 to put out Looking Forward to the New Me, an elegant baroque 5-track. Both this EP and the new single with Shout Out Louds are welcome gifts.
Shout Out Louds are scheduled for a handful of dates in Australia, Germany, and Sweden before making a push through the States in October and November. They'll be in Seattle at The Crocodile on Monday, November 13th. Until then, look for updates on their website and Facebook page, and catch their fantastic set for KEXP live series performed following the release of 2013's Optica below.
