Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear.
All this week we are celebrating Seattle Pride and PrideFest 2017 by featuring all LGBTQ artists for our “Song of the Gay” podcast. Today’s featured song is "Survival" by Adult Mom from the 2015 album Momentary Lapse of Happily on Tiny Engines.
Adult Mom - Survival (MP3)Adult Mom began as the solo project of Steph Knipe in a SUNY Purchase dorm room in 2012, and has since evolved into a four-piece band. They just released a new album, Soft Spots, which KEXP Music Director Don Yates describes as “emotive, smartly crafted pop-rock and intimate indie-folk”. Knipe, who identifies as non-binary, described in an interview with Bandcamp how they and the band are sometimes misgendered:
I get misgendered literally every second of every day, and it’s — I don’t know. I used to get so upset about it because when I first came out as non-binary, I was like, ‘Everyone needs to know this and read me as that.’ Which is still how I feel. But when a waitress will be like, ‘Hey, ladies,’ I’m like, ‘Whatever.’ I mean, it sucks, but it’s whatever. I feel like I’m internalizing it more.I’ll correct people when they say we’re a female-fronted band, especially with press stuff. I’m like, ‘No, we’re not.’ Or if it’s someone that I’m friends with who’s misgendering me, I’ll be like, ‘Hey, just so you know...’
Adult Mom just played Seattle last night, but you can still catch them in the Northwest, as they play an all-ages show tonight at the Make.Shift in Bellingham with Free Cake For Every Creature, Allyson Foster and Girl Teeth. Find out more tour dates and more music on their Facebook page and watch the video below for "Drive Me Home", another song from Soft Spots.
Also, be sure to tune in to KEXP all week to find out more about the Pride events happening around Seattle, including KEXP’s Pride Party, this Sunday, June 25th, at 5 Point Café in downtown Seattle at the historic Tilikum Place park.
