Song of the Day: The Black Angels - Currency

Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Currency”, by The Black Angels from their 2017 album, Death Song, out now on Partisan Records.

The Black Angels - Currency (MP3)The last decade has proven to be fruitful for an increasing number of emerging psych-rock acts, with the beloved Austin-based five-piece, The Black Angels, sitting pretty at the forefront of this resurgence. Known for their dark, blistering jams, the hypnotic group has amassed a dedicated following since beginning their musical journey in 2004. With the bulk of their career spent largely on the road, they have managed to spawn their own music festival and remain diligent in crafting new music all the while. Though Death Song, their fifth album, is the group’s first release in several years, their slot in the hierarchy of modern psych-rock hasn’t faltered in the slightest.

Our featured song of the day, “Currency”, is the opening track off The Black Angels' new album, Death Song, which was written in the frenzied wake of the US presidential election. It is an apocalyptic anthem, with a gripping delivery of eerie lyrics and composition that paint a sinister scenery of our nation. With the drawl of their trademark drone and a growling, chugging bass line that unexpectedly slams into bursts of cymbals and whining guitar, “Currency” is a whip-lash inducing ride. Though the intensity of the track may swell, its ominous tone is fabulously unrelenting.

The Black Angels have long since welcomed the road as their second home, with yet another trip to Europe lined up for them this fall. After that, they head back to the US for another hefty tour, with a special pitstop at The Showbox on October 23rd for us Seattleites!
