Sasquatch! Music Festival, Day 3: Car Seat Headrest

It hit around "Maud Gone": Will Toledo has finally found a band as talented as he is. For many years, Car Seat Headrest existed as the bedroom project of Will Toledo, releasing countless albums of expressive, vibrant pop/punk. However, after being signed to Matador, Toledo began recording and touring with a full band, including guitarist Ethan Ives, drummer Andrew Katz, and bassist Seth Dalby. Playing countless shows over the past two-plus years, the band has become a fully formed unit. Though Toledo still stands as its core, Car Seat Headrest now refers to a quartet, as exemplified by an excellent performance on Day 3 at Sasquatch Music Festival.The band's set opened by playing a number of highlights from Teens of Denial and Teens of Style (his twin peaks released on Matador), including "Vincent," "Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales," and the aforementioned "Maud Gone." Though the band sounded in good form, Toledo seemed slightly tired, his vocal performance on "Destroyed by Hippie Powers," disappearing at times amidst the band's sound. (Let us hope Will is getting enough sleep -- he deserves a full night's rest). However, the latter half of the set showcased two of the band's best pre-Matador songs: the mighty "Famous Prophets (Minds)" from Twin Fantasy, and "Beast Monster Thing (Love Isn't Love Enough)" from How to Leave Home. Both tracks, played live, stretched and expanded upon his original recordings, building incrementally in intensity before eventual releases. Towards the end of "Beast Monster Thing," Toledo bent down to the stage floor, creating waves of distortion amidst a gorgeous guitar part from Ives, the track connecting his early material to Teens of Denial and beyond. Though it takes a minute to remember because of the vastness of his creative output, Will Toledo is only 24. His legacy, however, seems almost set.
