Review Revue: The Scientists - Weird Love

Welcome to another installment in the occasional Review Revue sub-series, "Australian bands that you really should have heard of before now." (And by "you" I mean "I.") Previous installments include The Hummingbirds, Beasts of Bourbon, Paul Kelly and the Messengers, The Lime Spiders, and too many more to list. Seems there was quite the pipeline of weird rock from down under to the Pacific Northwest in the '80s, and the KCMU DJs were digging most of it.

Weird Love was released somewhat late in the band's career, and presented as sort of a re-recorded greatest hits collection, which seems to have worked for people who'd never heard the band before and those who were already familiar with their work. Sadly, they only released one more album before calling it quits, but I guess you have to quit sometime (unless you're Paul Kelly).

"This rocks. Re-recordings of some of their older material; these reduce the B. Party similarities. 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.2, 2.4 we have in their original forms. Great cover of a 007 theme on 2.6. This goes to H."

"Holy shit!!"

"Holy Demolition Derby!!

"'We Had Love' burns all over."

"Tim Muck's pop art. Or maybe he just had a bad day."

"It's pop art."

"Oh."

"GROW YR HAIR"

"Thank the good lord there are still records like this in H. Amen."

"S___ [illegible] dogs give this babe four barks! ARF ARF ARF ARF!"

Is there a more influential band with a deeper catalog more filled with albums that college radio DJs are likely to have intensely critical and …

Review Revue: 17 Pygmies - Jedda by the Sea

I assumed when I pulled out this record by 17 Pygmies that this would be one of those bands who released a DJ-beloved album or two in the '80s and then quietly dissolved, leaving almost no trace to survive into this Internet age of ours. How wrong I was! It turns out this band - originally a Savage…
