Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week, we are featuring songs by Icelandic artists performing at the 2017 Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, curated by Kevin Cole, host of The Afternoon Show on KEXP. Today’s song is Hórmónar's "Kynsvelt" from the self-released EP Hórmónar.
Hórmónar – Kynsvelt (MP3)
Even if your Icelandic is rusty, you can certainly figure out what Hórmónar is trying to say on "Kynsvelt." The quintet -- who formed in 2015 and have competed in the Icelandic Music Experiments -- whip up a noisy punk racket here, barrelling straight ahead with relentless fills and attitude-heavy guitars as frontwoman Brynhildur Karlsdóttir lets her anger and defiance spray in every direction and Brynhildur Karlsdóttir coats the affair is sticky sweet noise.
The members of the band proudly boast that they had no previous musical experience before getting together to play, as their "work ethic is based behind the belief that creating music should not be limited to those well acquainted with the process, and to go beyond their own comfort zone." Based on "Kynsvelt," it would seem they have a knack for learning on the job.
Hórmónar performs live at Reykjavik’s Kex Hostel, as part of KEXP’s Iceland Airwaves Music Festival broadcast, on Friday, November 3, at 1:30 PM (PST). Watch live streaming video of their performance via the KEXP Facebook page. Until then, watch the band perform today's featured song for KEXP last year from Toppstöðin in Reykjavík.
