Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “The Possibility” by Worriers from the 2017 album Survival Pop on SideOneDummy Records.
Worriers - The Possibility (MP3)
Hailing from Brooklyn, forceful punk rockers Worriers have only been at it since 2011, but their struggle against the system extends back far beyond that. From their gritty 2015 LP Imaginary Life — produced by Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! — to their alluringly melodic new LP Survival Pop, lead singer and songwriter Lauren Denitzio wants to ask the big questions they've been struggling with for years. Reading and doing activism is one thing, Denitzio explained to Village Voice in 2016, but they always felt that the political possibilities of punk music were what drew them toward fronting the acclaimed band.
“Right now, going to any sort of punk-related show is phenomenal and the world’s more accepting and open than I could have imagined when I was growing up,” they told the publication. “On the other hand, [punk] still seems to be resistant sometimes to really owning up to its history.” It’s these grand ideals and opportunities that guide our Song of the Day, a captivating track with soaring guitar refrains and plenty of attractive tones.
Make sure to catch Worriers on their current tour — they hit Seattle this Sunday, October 15th at the Vera Project, and have a ton of other upcoming dates across the country. Visit the band’s website for more info. And watch them perform three tracks -- "The Possibility", "Future Me" and "They/Them/Theirs" -- last month on truTV's The Chris Gethard Show below.
