Without DJ Chilly—and music lovers like you—I'd be helpless at the mercy of tiny robots. And algorithms. Ah, science and math, my old nemeses. *shudder*
I appreciate Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist—but it's only as good as the hints you feed it. Repeat-play one Missing Persons track in a moment of nostalgic tomfoolery and your feed is lousy with Animotion, Quarterflash, and Stacy Q for six months. Stupid robots.
Now I'm curious about modern Latin music. But the itty-bitty bots in my phone can't fetch recommendations from the depths of Spotify until I direct them wisely. I've heard enough Astrud Gilberto remixes in my life already.
Thanks to KEXP donors who power El Sonido and DJ Chilly every Monday night, I can shout new Latin discoveries into my iPhone on the regular: Sotomayor! Alex Anwandter! Nicola Cruz! Xenia Rubinos! Dengue Dengue Dengue!
"Got it, boss," reply the robots. With a click of miniature metal heels, they scurry off to try and do better than the puny human. But Chilly usually outsmarts them; more often than not, you've already heard what they suggest before on listener-powered KEXP.
If you haven't made a gift to KEXP's Fall Fundraising Drive yet, please donate right now. It's up to us to show those robots who's boss.
If you’ve been waiting to power KEXP, GiveBIG is the perfect opportunity.

The psych- and Tropicalia-inflected rock of Boogarins is so intriguing that when their earliest recordings had been picked up by music fans all over the globe, in early 2013, the band hadn't even played any gigs. Fortunately, becoming a live band only just shortly afterwards didn't prevent the Goiâ…
