While the standout track of Ages & Ages' 2014 sophomore album, Divisionary, surely still has you singing "Do The Right Thing" in grandiose fashion, the Portland group has not been content to sit idly behind the success of a past project. Instead, they have been hard at work crafting their third album, Something To Ruin, due August 19th via Partisan Records. The band has always managed to pack meaningful themes behind their uplifting and infectious folk sound, and their third album seems destined to follow suit, as a trip to Central America inspired the theme of commercialism and its consequential superficiality promised to be weaved into the new project. Album single "They Want More" guarantees that, offering another addictively uplifting track with a weighty thematic element, while implementing new ambient electronic elements into the songwriting. The result is an added layer of sonic complexity that doesn't hamper the appealing simplicity that Ages & Ages has always offered in their sound. The video for the track, premiering on the KEXP blog today and directed by Alicia J. Rose, hammers home the album's theme, displaying how the continuous demands from others and a commercial society can leave you as empty as a melted ice cream cone.
Ages & Ages will be playing a 21+ show at Barboza on September 8th. Until then, enjoy the vivid imagery of Something To Ruin's first single below, and look out for the rest of the album on August 19th.
