This week in El Sonido, guest writer Aarin Wright recommends some upcoming modern Latin concerts in Seattle. (¡in English y en español!):
Summer has come to Seattle (though the persistent rain and gray would beg to differ) and the concert boom is upon us. And for us fans of modern Latin music, the boom is large, noticeable and above all thrilling. Artists from all over the world are touring to the Pacific Northwest, some for the first time, and gracing our stages with their unique and dynamic sounds. Just last week trilingual MC Boogat rocked the Nectar Lounge, and Brazilian psych-surf band Boogarins played their second Seattle show at The Sunset Tavern in June. With such a powerful start, it’s impossible not to keep the momentum going. Below are some of the incredible Latin artists swinging by soon.El verano ha llegado a Seattle (aunque sigue lloviendo y el cielo se tiña de gris día tras día…) y el “boom” de los conciertos ya está aquí. Y para nosotros, los fanáticos de la música latina moderna, este ‘boom” es grande, evidente y sobre todo emocionante. Artistas de todos los rincones del mundo están haciendo giras al noroeste del Pacífico, algunos por primera vez, llevando consigo sonidos únicos y dinámicos. Sólo la semana pasada, el MC trilingüe Boogat realizó un concierto increíble en Nectar Lounge, y la banda brasileña de psych-surf Boogarins tocó su segundo concierto en Seattle en The Sunset Tavern en junio. Los BlendersAfter the 2015 release of their debut LP, Chavos Bien, I was about ready to sell my belongings for a ticket to Mexico City in order to see Los Blenders live at last. But the fact that these lo-fi, self-described “proto porn pop “ artists are swinging by Seattle is the biggest summer treat with a cherry on top. They’ll be rocking the Funhouse this Thursday, July 21 and I strongly encourage all to come headbang with me. Listen to the title track from Chavos Bien below!
Después del lanzamiento de su álbum debut, Chavos Bien, estuve a punto de vender mis posesiones para conseguir un billete a la ciudad de México para ver por fin a Los Blenders en vivo. Pero ellos, artistas que se describen a sí mismos como “proto porn pop,” vienen a Seattle! OzomatliChances are, if you enjoy at least one genre of music, Ozomatli will have a song for you. This six-piece LA band plays everything from funk to hip-hop to chicano rock and todos in between. They’re a staple in the modern Latin music scene, and I can’t wait to finally cross them off my concert bucket list on July 31 at The Crocodile. Check out their live performance from when they swung by KEXP back in 2013 below.
Si te gusta al menos un género de música, es muy probable que Ozomatli tenga un tema para tí. Esta banda de Los Angeles de seis miembros toca de todo desde funk a hip-hop, chicano rock y demás. Es una banda elemental en la escena moderna de música latina y no puedo esperar a verla el 31 de julio en The Crocodile. Escucha su directo en su visita a KEXP en el 2013 abajo.
Nicola CruzOk y’all...there is not a single concert I am more excited for this summer than Nicola Cruz at the Nectar Lounge on August 12. The Ecuadorian producer dropped his debut and my favorite album of 2015, Prender el Alma, and it’s damn near perfect for any situation: long drives at night, cool and classy dinner parties, stargazing. It’s an incredible mix of traditional Andean sounds and instruments with smooth, ambient electronica that Cruz has labeled Andes Step. Take a listen to Colibria below and prepare to be immersed in this new game-changing genre.
Personalmente, no hay concierto este verano que tenga más ganas de ver que el de Nicola Cruz en Nectar Lounge el 12 de agosto. El productor ecuatoriano lanzó su álbum debut y mi disco favorito de 2015, Prender el Alma. Es casi perfecto para cualquiera situación: viajes largos en coche durante la noche, cenas y fiestas, mirando las estrellas. Es una mezcla increíble de sonidos e instrumentos andinos con electrónica suave y ambiental que Cruz ha describido como Andes Step. Escucha Colibria abajo y preparate sumergirte en este nuevo género.
B-Side PlayersMake sure to bust out your dancin’ shoes this summer, because San Diego band B-Side Players are playing the Nectar Lounge on August 16. B-Side Players have been bringing the sounds of Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico and Brazil to stages for nearly 20 years, mixing in a healthy dose of funk, rock, jazz and hip-hop. It’s bound to be a tremendous Tuesday! Listen to their track "Nuestras Demandas" below.
Prepara tus zapatos de baile este verano, porque B-Side Players, una banda de San Diego, tocarán en Nectar Lounge el 16 de agosto. B-Side Players han traido los sonidos de Cuba, Jamaica, México y Brasil a los escenarios desde hace casi 20 años, con una mezcla de funk, rock, jazz y hip-hop. Va a ser un martes magnifico! Xenia RubinosWe’ve touched on Xenia Rubinos before on the El Sonido blog, but she is returning to Seattle on September 15 for a show at Barboza. Qué suerte! Especially following the release of her new lyric music video for the track, “Mexican Chef”. The song and video examine economic inequality through driving beats and bilingual lyrics. Check out the video below, and Rubino’s interview with THE FADER on her inspirations for the song.
