El Sonido: ¡Chile-po!

This week in El Sonido guest writer Aarin Wright recommends some of her favorite artists from Santiago de Chile. (¡in English y en español!):

Like most folk, I have an enormous bucket list of cities. Places to visit all over the world, all for different reasons. However, out of all those cities, Santiago de Chile is number one. And it’s all due to its music scene. The artists coming out of Santiago are dynamic. They’re unique. And their music is playing through my head on repeat (Seriously, I can’t get it out). More often then not I’ll fall in love with a new artist, run to my computer to see where they’re from and discover once again they’re based in Santiago. Spanning a vast range of genres, styles and sounds, below are some favorites.

Como casi todos, tengo una enorme lista de ciudades que quiero visitar antes de que muera. Ciudades en cada rincón del mundo, y quiero visitar cada una por razones diferentes. Sin embargo, de entre todas estas ciudades, Santiago de Chile se sitúa en la primera posición. Y la razón es su música. Los artistas de Santiago son dinámicos. Únicos. Y su música resuena en mi mente a todas horas (en serio, no puedo quitármela de la cabeza). Normalmente me enamoro de una nueva artista, busco de dónde es y la mayoría de las veces está basada en Santiago. Con una variedad enorme de géneros, estilos y sonidos, en la parte inferior se encuentran algunas de mis favoritas.

Up first is Daniel Riveros, aka singer-songwriter Gepe. Where to even begin with this Chilean superstar? Making music since 1999, Gepe has mastered the art of Latin-pop, blending together folk techniques of the Andes with modern, electronic sounds. It’s impossible not to smile at the start of an upbeat Gepe song, not to tap your feet at the emotion packed lyrics and not to wind up dancing in joyful circles by the end of the first refrain. Gepe is FINALLY swinging by Seattle on May 4 at Nectar for his world tour. Listen to "TKM" below off of his most recent album to start practicing your dance moves.

El primero es Daniel Riveros, también conocido como el cantautor Gepe. ¿Por dónde debería empezar con esta superestrella chilena? Haciendo música desde 1999, Gepe ha dominado el arte del Latin-pop, con una mezcla de técnicas del folk de los andes con sonidos modernos y electrónicos. Es imposible dejar sonreír al inicio de un tema optimista de Gepe, no mover los pies con sus letras emocionales y no acabar bailando para el final del primer estribillo. Gepe tocará en Seattle, POR FIN, el 4 de mayo dentro de su gira mundial. Escucha “TKM” abajo de su álbum más reciente para empezar a practicar tus pasos de baile!

Hablamos ahora de Planeta No, el trío poderoso que creó la canción “Odio.” Publicado en su álbum debut al final de 2015, “Odio” captura a la perfección los sentimientos de la angustia adolescente, con guitarras afiladas y un ritmo constante. Conformada por Gonzalo García, Camilo Molina y Juan Pablo Garin, el futuro de Planeta No parece brillante, ya que pueden crear canciones que fácilmente representan mi pasado y el de muchas otras.

Up next is Astro, since it is absolutely impossible to write about Santiago groups without highlighting this tropical electronic indie bubblegum boy band. Since releasing their debut album in 2011, Astro has been steadily breaking in to the USA music scene, receiving positive reviews from NPR Music and other American critics as well as playing large festivals such as Lollapalooza Chigago. With an upbeat sound similar to MGMT or Passion Pit, Astro’s newest album Chicos de la Luz is keeping their momentum going. Listen to "Druida" below.

Vamos ahora a Astro, porque es imposible escribir un blog sobre bandas de Santiago sin mencionando este grupo de chicos trópico, electrónico y indie. Hasta publicando su álbum debut en 2011, Astro ha sido rotando a la escena de música en los EEUU, con comentarios positivos de NPR Music y otros críticos estadounidenses además de tocando en festivales grandes como Lollapalooza Chicago. Con un sonido alegre muy simular a MGMT o Passion Pit, el nuevo disco de Astro, Chicos de la Luz, está manteniendo su ímpetu. Escucha a "Druida" abajo.

Moving back in time to the disco-era, we find pop rock group Adrianigual. I simply dare you to listen to “Nunca Vienes a Mi Casa,” their newest single, and not immediately bust a move. When it comes to Chilean pop, Adrianigual can do no wrong.

Viajamos al tiempo de Disco y encontramos la banda de pop-rock, Adrianigual. Te atrevo escuchar a “Nunca Vienes a Mi Casa,” su tema nuevo, sin bailando. Cuando se trata de pop chileno, Adrianigual es incapaz de hacer mal.

Our final stop on this brief Santiago musical tour brings us to Tunacola, the pop hop group behind “Danky.” As one of my first introductions to Latin music, their upbeat Spanglish lyrics and electric videos only left me craving more. Listen to Danky below.
