Just on the horizon, lurks Mount St. Helens, sitting 100 miles south of Seattle and 50 miles northeast of Portland. It was on May 18th, 1980, at 8:32 AM PT that it resulted in the most destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. Will Mt. St. Helens erupt again? Scientists say yes, but note that the average eruption recurrence interval is every 100-300 years, so for now, let's commemorate the day with a Video Roundup. Kicking off the set is a clip of the now-defunct Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band actually performing at the Johnston Ridge Observatory from the Mount St. Helens Institute, shot and edited by KEXP's own Scott Holpainen. It was the first time a band has ever played a volcano in the continental United States. Thank god, the rockin' didn't lead to more rocking. Watch below:
