El Sonido: Quarto Negro, Dengue Dengue Dengue, Piyama Party, Quitapenas

Kicking it off is a new video from the Brazilian duo Quarto Negro, who stopped by KEXP in July of 2015 for an exclusive live performance. "Filhos do Frio" is the opening track to their latest full-length, Amor Violento, and features some beautiful shots of Portland, Oregon, where the album was recorded with The Helio Sequence and some other members of the PDX music community. While making the album they collaborated in GRU-PDX, a documentary about the vibrant music scene in Portland. The doc is now available to watch, check out the trailer below.

Up to bat next is one of Lima, Peru’s finest purveyors of global bass, Dengue Dengue Dengue. It’s been four years since they dropped their debut LP and I’m mad excited to see that the next one, Siete Raíces, is on the way. The first single, “Guarida”, is less neon and bombastic, more dark and groovy, and features mesmerizing vocals from Sara Van.

Moving on to Mexico's Piyama Party. I've always been a fan of their humor and sonic casualness, there's some kind of disinterested sentimentality that always felt just right. With their latest LP, Álbum De Oro, they really filled out their sound, and I'll admit I was scared of the growth at first. Turns out the record is great and "Paz Mundial" is a good example. The new video shows a handful of people leaving their lives to join a cult in a purple forest, and I'm all in.

SoCal band Quitapenas have a great modern take on classic afro-Latin sounds. Their self-titled 2014 debut full-length is well worth picking up. Trust me, you'll dig it. The new remix EP adds a bit of electronics for a different, and also cool, twist on the dancefloor.
