The Suffers have earned their name: it took them about five years of running the Houston circuit before jumping overnight to national attention. Houston is one of the cities that often gets overlooked in the discussion of the American music scene, partially because neighboring New Orleans dwarfs it in the cultural conversation, but that's about to change with the recent release of The Suffers' eponymous LP. The ten-piece went from quitting their day jobs to playing the late show circuit, and their show is a sight to see: everyone decked in black, dudes on horns rocking and snapping in unison - it's nearly straight out of The Blues Brothers. Vocalist Kam Franklin is enthralling, with her velvet voice and a mesmerizing stage presence, and her talent is buoyed by a nine member band that fits as tightly as a jigsaw. Horns stab at lilting melodies while creamy organ tones and deep pocket bass evoke soul and funk in a way that only a big ol' pair of bongos can improve - and they've got those too!
