Song of the Day: Gangly - Fuck with Someone Else

Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Fuck with Someone Else” by Gangly, a self-released single from late 2014.

In Iceland, being the music microcosm that it is, new bands break all the time, and given its tight-knit community, their members are usually pretty well known, so it came as a surprise when, in late 2014, Gangly hit the scene. A supposed mystery band, Gangly submitted their first (and so far only) single as a video to a local website, listing no band members or biographical information. When the Grapevine caught the story, though, people were guessing pretty quickly who was involved. Anyone who'd heard Sin Fang or Samaris before picked up on the voices of Sindri Már Sigfússon and Jófríður Ákadóttir, but it took a bit longer to decipher Oyama's Úlfur Einarsson atypical falsetto. “That was never a planed out thing. It was more of a joke,” Sindri told the Grapevine later about adding Úlfur: "No one knew that he was in the band. He would be at parties where people were talking about the song, biting his tongue and sending me text messages. That also why we kept it a secret - we thought it was so funny." But secret or no, the trio was an immediate sensation thanks to the darkly alluring vibe of "Fuck with Someone Else", a dysfunctional love song that fits none of its members' previous catalogs as it blends R&B, electronica, and all three artists' ethereal voices.

The only thing truly secretive right now is when Gangly will release new music. They've been performing since Iceland Airwaves last year, and though only a second version of today's featured song exists (remixed by Úlfur Úlfur's IamHelgi), the band promises another single very soon! Look for it on their Facebook page and for a live version of it to be featured on the KEXP blog.
