El Sonido: Aquí Estamos

This week in El Sonido, guest writer Aarin Wright recommends some of her favorite Latin artist from the USA. (¡in Enlgish y en español!):

Were you aware that there are currently more Spanish-speakers in the United States than Spain? Or how about that the US is the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, following only Mexico? Spanish has an enormous role in this country, and I’m guessing that’s why so many incredible Latin artists are based within our borders. These artists are creating awe-inspiring music in both English and Spanish, and they all deserve a shoutout. Below are just a few of my all-time favorites.

¿Sabías que hay más hispanohablantes en los Estados Unidos que en España? ¿O qué los EEUU es el segundo país con mayor número de hispanohablantes del mundo, sólo después de México? El español juega un papel enorme en este país, por ello hay tantas artistas latinas en los EEUU que están creando música tanto en inglés como en español y que merecen total reconocimiento; en la parte inferior se encuentran algunas de mis favoritas.

Starting off in Brooklyn, New York we find explosive music maker Xenia Rubinos. Of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, Rubinos weaves Spanish and English lyrics through soulful punk tracks, delivering an incredibly unique sound. Pop-smokey vocals, intense keyboard riffs, syncopated drumming and smooth bass lines make her debut album Magic Trix a must listen. Xenia Rubinos will be playing at the Nectar Lounge on April 8th (qué suerte!), so check out her electric live set from when she stopped by KEXP in January of 2014 to get pumped!

Empezamos en Brooklyn, Nueva York, donde encontramos una artista energética, Xenia Rubinos. Con ascendencia Puerto Riqueña y Cubana, Rubinos compone tanto en español como en inglés sus temas de punk y soul, creando un sonido realmente único. Una voz de humo, un teclado intenso, la percusión sincopada y líneas suaves de bajo hacen de su álbum debut, Magic Trix, un imprescindible que todo el mundo debería escuchar. Xenia Rubinos tocará en el Nectar Lounge el 8 de Abril (¡qué suerte!), así que echa un vistazo al video abajo, en exclusiva para KEXP, de su rompedor directo en su visita a “El Sonido,” en enero de 2014; te emocionará!

Staying in New York, we move on to Empress Of, the solo project of singer-songwriter Lorely Rodriguez. With parents of Spanish-Honduran descent, she recently released a powerful pop album, Me, in September of last year. While the entire album is in English, my favorite track comes from her 2013 album, Systems. Listen to “Tristeza” below, for some mind-blowing harmonies and beautiful lyrics en español.

Todavía en Nueva York, pasamos a Empress Of, el proyecto en solitario de la cantautora Lorely Rodriguez. Con padres de España y Honduras, recientemente lanzó un álbum de pop muy poderoso llamado Me, concretamente en septiembre del año pasado. Mientras que este último álbum es íntegramente en inglés, mi tema favorito proviene de su álbum de 2013, Systems. Escucha las alucinantes armonías y la bella letra en Español de “Tristeza” :

Moving on to Miami we find Venezuelan born producer, Toto González, aka Mr. Pauer. Mr. Pauer has created “Electrópico,” his own signature style of music consisting of electronica, salsa, cumbia y más. Hear the unique sound below in a track off his newest release, Orange.

Viajamos ahora hasta Miami, dónde encontramos a Toto González, tambien conocido como Mr. Pauer. Este productor Venezolano ha creado el “electrópico,” su estilo de música personal, que consiste en la electrónica, la salsa, la cumbia y más. Escucha el sonido único de uno de los temas de su nuevo álbum, Orange:

Up next is Colombia born, Virgina raised Kali Uchis. Singer, songwriter and producer, Uchis is practically genre-defying, writing in styles that range from sultry R&B to classic doo-wap. Not to mention her incredible Spanish covers (check out “Sabor A Mi” o “Porque te vas”). Below is my favorite track of her newest album, Por Vida. Listen to “Lottery.”

Hablamos ahora de Kali Uchis, nacida en Colombia y afincada en Virginia. Cómo cantante, compositora y productora, Uchis desafía los géneros musicales, escribiendo en estilos desde un sensual R&B a otros como el doo-wap classical, sin dejar de mencionar sus increíbles covers en español (como “Sabor a Mi” o “Por qué te vas”). El siguiente es mi tema favorito de su nuevo álbum, Por Vida. Escucha “Lottery.”

We return once more to NYC to find Roberto Carlos Lange, the mastermind behind Helado Negro. Born to Ecuadorian parents in Florida, Helado Negro is currently based in Brooklyn, pushing out some incredible music. With funky electropop sounds and bilingual lyrics, what more could one want from an artist? Check out his live KEXP performance below, tinsel backup dancers included. Volvemos una vez más a Nueva York para encontrar Roberto Carlos Lange, el cerebro que creó Helado Negro. De padres ecuatorianos en Florida, ahora Helado Negro está afincado en Nueva York, lanzando música increíble.
