El Sonido: SXSW 2016 Latin Recommendations

South By Southwest is a music lover’s wonderland with a magnificently overwhelming amount of bands and DJs to check out. You'll have the chance to see some of your current interests, old favorites, and maybe most importantly discover brand new sounds. Austin is a multicultural city and SXSW always offers a wide array of musical flavors. Once again, Latin music is well represented at this year’s festival and El Sonido would like to share some of our recommendations.

Let's move on to Spain. KEXP favorite Capsula will once again bring some great experimental heaviness to Texas for SXSW. Dig their KEXP performance above. Also, be sure to catch another one of our Spanish favorites Juventud Juché, as well as some other great rock groups like The Parrots, Sexy Zebras, Los Nastys, Perro and Crudo Pimento. On the beat tip from España, catch Meneo, a great electronic artist from Guatemala now based in Madrid. We recently put together a mixtape of some of these artists and many more from Spain:

Colombia is in full effect this year at the festival as well. We most definitely recommend checking out the Bogotá electronic pop duo Pedrina y Rio as well as an awesome young psych rock group from Santa Marta, El Otro Grupo. We've got to spotlight the incredible audio/video experience that is seeing El Freaky live. This Colombian global bass crew is a favorite of ours, don't sleep. Speaking of dope live acts from Colombia, the electronic funk folk fusion of Systema Solar is a must see. Consulado Popular would be a great choice to rock out to, and catch Duran and Velo De Oza también. We've got a couple Colombian mixtapes to check out on our Soundcloud as a warm up:

Chile has great some bands representing this year's SXSW as well, including a couple that we at El Sonido have just discovered and love - Miss Garrison and Natisú. Don't miss Costa Rica's Cocofunka - their funky new full-length Chúcaro is killer and they're way fun live. Mexico is bringing some stellar stuff too - like show favorites Sotomayor and Algodón Egipcio (originally from Venezuela), as well as Eptos Uno, 3ballMTY and Lng/SHT. On the forward-thinking hip hop tip you've got to check Joyce Santana and Álvaro Díaz, both repping Puerto Rico.

There's some killer picks to see from the U.S.A. as well. The Chamanas is one of our favorite groups right now, as is Ela Minus. Happy Colors is a great global bass act, and make sure and dig El Bles at the Sol Life party. Texas crew Peligrosa always brings heat too. Buyepongo, Edith Crash, Gina Chavez and Grupo Fantasma are all also excellent artists that we wholeheartedly recommend. Have fun down there!
