El Sonido: Solamente Mujeres

This week in El Sonido, guest writer Aarin Wright recommends some of her favorite female artists. (¡in Enlgish y en español!):

One of the major perks of being a female-identified, enormous Latin music fan is the vast amount, and incredible quality, of content created by Latina women. No matter where in the world you turn to, be it Spain, Chile, Costa Rica y más, these women are holding their own and seriously bumping up the Latin music scene. Of the Latin artists who have broken into the mainstream, some of the most popular are female. This includes Chilean MC Ana Tijoux, (who rocked Bumbershoot back in 2012) and Mexican singer-songwriters Julieta Venegas and Carla Morrison (Venegas has performed large US festivals such as Coachella and Outside Lands, and Morrison has secured her own Coachella spot this year.) It’s easy to adore these powerhouses, and give them the listening-time they clearly deserve. However, through my eternal search for more amazing Latin music, I have discovered multiple female artists and groups who merit just as much attention.Una de las principales ventajas de ser una mujer aficionada a la música latina es la gran cantidad, e increíble calidad, del contenido musical creado por las mujeres latinas. El lugar en el mundo es lo de menos; España, Chile, Costa Rica… Estas mujeres están produciendo sonidos increíbles y fortaleciendo la escena de la música Latina. De los artistas latinos más populares repartidos por todo el mundo, muchísimas son mujeres. Esto incluye a la MC chilena Ana Tijoux, (que tocó en el festival de Bumbershoot, aquí en Seattle en 2012) y las cantautoras mexicanas Julieta Venegas y Carla Morrison (Venegas ha tocado en grandes festivales de los Estados Unidos, tales como Coachella y Outside Lands, y Morrison ha confirmado su asistencia a Coachella este año). Es fácil adorar a estas maravillosas artistas, y tomarse el tiempo que verdaderamente merecen en escucharlas. Sin embargo, a través de mi búsqueda eterna de la extraordinaria música Latina, he descubierto varias artistas y grupos de mujeres que merecen igual atención.

First up is Madrid based garage-pop band Hinds. With a worldwide tour behind them and a debut LP, Leave Me Alone, released this month, the all-female quartet is ringing in a very sweet New Year. Cheeky lyrics and rumbling guitar riffs make Leave Me Alone already a stand out album of 2016. La primera podría ser Hinds, una banda de garaje-pop de Madrid. Con una gira mundial a sus espaldas y un LP debut, Leave Me Alone, lanzado este mes, el cuarteto femenino está teniendo un año nuevo muy dulce. Letras descaradas y riffs intensos de guitarra hacen ya de Leave Me Alone un álbum notable de este 2016. Echa un ojo al video en exclusiva de KEXP de su rompedor directo en su visita a “El Sonido,” en octubre de 2015. Esperemos que vuelvan pronto a Seattle. [Sunday, March 27th at The Sunset - Chilly]

Moving on to Santiago, Chile, we find female duo Marineros. After eagerly awaiting their debut album, O Marineros, nearly all of 2015, these existential pop rockers did not disappoint when it finally was released in November. Fourth single “Secretos” is among one of the strongest tracks, and one of my personal favorites. A song about the terror of catching feelings, the emotions of “Secretos” are easy to relate to at any age, and in any language.

Viajamos ahora hasta Santiago de Chile, dónde encontramos el dúo femenino Marineros. Después de meses de impaciente espera, en noviembre de 2015, el grupo lanzó por fin su debut, O Marineros, y estas rockeras de pop-rock existencial no decepcionaron. El cuarto single, "Secretos," es uno de los temas más viscerales, y también uno de mis favoritos. Se trata de una canción que indaga en el terror de los sentimientos, generando emociones fácilmente adaptables a cualquier edad, y en cualquier idioma.

Heading back to Spain we have Valencia based multi-instrumentalist Sandra Rapulp, aka SALFUMÁN. Her debut EP brings a sexy, synthy, long-drives-at-night sound to the Love Our Records label. She’s also the first solo female artist to join their roster, so kudos to her! Check out "Futura Mujer" below.

Volviendo a España de nuevo, tenemos a la multi-instrumentista valenciana Sandra Rapulp, o SALFUMÁN. Su EP debut trae un sonido sexy, de synth, y de largos viajes nocturnos por carretera para el sello Love Our Records. Sandra es también la primera artista femenina en solitario en unirse a su lista, enhorabuena! Puedes escuchar su tema "Futura Mujer" abajo.

Located right here in the United States is an artist I intend on keeping tabs on for years to come. Her name is Gabriela Jimeno, a Brooklyn based artist with Columbian roots, releasing music as Ela Minus. This past November she released her debut EP, First Words: three songs of delicate synth-pop, which tickle your dancing bones, as well bring a sense of nostalgia with every listen. Check out "Jamaica" below, the only track in español.

Desde aquí, los Estados Unidos, una artista a la que tengo la intención de seguir por muchos años. Su nombre es Gabriela Jimeno, una artista colombiana afincada en Brooklyn, lanzando música como Ela Minus. Este pasado noviembre lanzó su EP debut, First Words: tres temas de synth-pop delicado con aire nostálgico, pero con los que también apetece mover el cuerpo. Puedes escuchar su tema "Jamaica" abajo, el único en español.

Finishing up, let’s head back to Santiago, Chile, where we find electronic pop artist Fakuta. A heavy science fiction influence brought us Fakuta’s sophomore album, Tormenta Solar, in 2014. There’s a soft spot in my heart for all Chilean pop, and Fakuta is no exception. The LP is funky and groovy and space-like. If we were to throw a party on an intergalactic spaceship, this would be the album of choice. Check out the title track below.

Para finalizar este recorrido, volvemos a Santiago de Chile, donde encontramos una artista de pop electrónico, Fakuta. Se percibe una gran influencia de la ciencia-ficción en el sonido de su segundo álbum de 2014, Tormenta Solar. Hay un lugar especial en mi corazón para toda la música pop chilena y Fakuta no es una excepción. El LP es funky y groovy y como el espacio exterior. Si diéramos una fiesta en una nave espacial intergaláctica, pincharíamos este álbum. Puedes escuchar "Tormenta Solar" abajo.
