Dazzling D.C. duo GEMS stopped by KEXP’s new home, filling our cavernous live room with their spacious and glimmering dream pop. Singer/keyboardist Lindsay Pitts and singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Clifford John Usher released their debut LP, Kill the One You Love, after writing together for years and putting out the critically acclaimed Medusa EP. Their timing was perfect: as the blogosphere becomes saturated with female-singer electronic duos, Pitts avoids the vocally waifish trend plaguing the genre and instead fills their reverb-drenched sonic space with the confidence of an ’80s diva. Despite a thoroughly modern sound steeped in electronica, something waxes nostalgic, and the two share a longing with Cheryl Waters for the album-centric days of yore. There couldn't be a more valuable use of your time then watching GEMS in-studio at KEXP now.
