Doubles - Plant (MP3)Flowing downstream from the PNW currents of late 90s and early 2000s pop rock, the Hudson Vally via Whidbey Island DIY thrashers in Doubles emulate a garage-tinged, emo rock savviness that accentuates their raw sugar sound. The very green four-piece is presumably in the process of releasing a debut album, but have thankfully released a single to us called "Plant." Surely expediting their development, several members of the band recently collaborated with each other and released music under the moniker O-Face. Considering Joe Reinhart (Algernon Cadawaller, Hop Along) recorded and mixed O-Face's Mint, it's no surprise the album is full of the poppy garage rock that Doubles embraces.
Although their new project is still germinating, Doubles excitedly has a new single out called "Plant" that has quickly grown roots and has begun sprouting. Vocals from Seth Sobottka and Preston Ossman range from both a fragile opening to a roaring mid-song build to connote those sonic vulnerabilities and a display of resilience. They quip, "Worlds a plant / let it grow / if you're unwell / let me know," which are the soft and sappy whispers that start off the song over top of sleek palm mutes and pretty-sliding hooks. A quarter of the way through, a volumizing explosion of drum and guitarmonies propel the rest of the song into melodic guitars, ear-candy licks, and a air-fist-pounding beat.
Judging from their Facebook page, Doubles seems to be laying low on shows right now, but you should definitely give them a like if you're interested in following them and want to know when their debut album drops. For now, here's another song from the O-Face album:
