Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Revolution” by Van William, featuring First Aid Kit, from his 2016 single self-released on Shawnee Waters.
Van William feat. First Aid Kit - Revolution (MP3)There’s something comforting about the opening moments of Van William’s “Revolution.” With percussive strums of acoustic guitar and forlorn swells of brass, one can almost imagine the song emerging from a warm cabin in a cold wood. And indeed, with the first lyrics of the tune referencing lost love, a sense of healing dominates much of the track’s mood, specifically the type of healing that comes only with finality and acceptance. As Van William, formerly of Port O'Brien and Waters, aided by the stunning vocals of First Aid Kit, declares, “I want a revolution/you want a short solution... It’s a story as old as time.” There's no ambiguity in these words, rather a solemn but sure recognition of differences. For those times when there’s no choice but to move on, “Revolution” can be your guide.
Van William doesn’t have any shows lined-up as of now, but keep up by checking his Facebook page and Twitter for more news. Also, check out a beautiful live performance of “Revolution” here:
