David Bowie has written and performed some of the most groundbreaking music of the 20th century. His passion for music, art, fashion and theatre has fueled a career that’s influenced numerous generations and captivated the world. And it’s not over yet…
It’s the influence of David Bowie that inspired Northwest Polite Society (NWPS) to organize International David Bowie Day in conjunction with KEXP and Independence Printage. January 8, 2016 is David Bowie’s 69th birthday and also marks the release of Bowie’s new album, ★ (pronounced "Blackstar"). “Bowie’s music is more than just notes, his keen eye for innovation and chameleon-like persona are what make him so unique. He’s a living art project,” said NWPS Principal Ben London. “International David Bowie Day is purely a labor of love. It’s a way to brighten the streets in January, to remind us the impact of great art and artists. It’s a great way to pay tribute to a musical treasure and provide a little inspiration to get 2016 off on the right foot.”To create the perfect mix of music and art, KEXP DJ’s John Richards, Cheryl Waters, and Kevin Cole are going to highlight David Bowie throughout the day from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm this Friday. Listen for selections from every era of Bowie’s remarkable career, including rare recordings, live performances, collaborations, productions, music from artists that inspired Bowie, artists he inspired, and the contextual curation that KEXP has become so well known for. Throughout the day, John, Cheryl, and Kevin will be giving away Bowie music, including a 12-CD box set, David Bowie: Five Years 1969-1973, as well as 7" vinyl singles, and more! "While many artists struggle to maintain relevance for a couple albums, David Bowie’s been able to do it for an entire 50 year 25 album career,” said KEXP DJ Kevin Cole. “Always exploring new musical and artistic territory, it’s forever fascinating to hear what David Bowie’s going to do next. So, on his 69th birthday, and the release day of his new album Blackstar, KEXP is excited to celebrate the music, life, and influence of David Bowie with International Bowie Day. Hell, let’s make that Intergalactic Bowie Day, he is the man who fell to earth after all.” In addition, The Vera Project’s Eric Carnell curated a group of 12 local artists to create visual works based on Bowie’s music and persona. The art will be installed throughout the city January 4-8, 2016. Artists include: Shawn Wolfe, Chris Rollins, John Cristcello, Eric Carnell, Mike Klay, Derek Erdman, Kelsey Gallo, David Gallo, Barry Blankenship, Tory Franklin, Mike Grigg, Chip Baker, and Dan Shafer.
