This week in El Sonido we'll be traveling to psychedelic Brazil, funky Costa Rica and the Andes of Los Angeles before we hit a party in Argentina on our way to some classic Latin sounds mixed up in Portland, Oregon.

The Brazilian duo Eduardo Praça and Thiago Klein formed Quarto Negro in 2009 and have since released two EPs and an acclaimed LP, Desconocidos, recorded in Barcelona, Spain. The latest album, Amor Violento, was recorded at The Helio Sequence's studio in Portland, Oregon, and features fellow Portland musicians Justin Harris of Menomena and Kathy Foster of The Thermals. The recording process was captured by filmmakers for the documentary GRU-PDX which takes a look at the Portland music scene through the eyes of foreign musicians. Dig in to their stellar live set of hypnotic psych that was recorded at KEXP in July of 2015.

There’s a couple new tracks available from Los Angeles’ Rafi El. He’s definitely an El Sonido favorite with his seamless blend of pop, electronics and Latin folk sounds. “Culebra” is a cover of Peruvian chicha group Los Invasores Del Progreso and "Bacanal" is a great unreleased track from the sessions that produced the full length Ay De Mi. Make sure and give a listen to Rafi’s exclusive live set for El Sonido as well.

Argentina’s Mujercitas Terror always deliver quality dark post-punk garage, and the new LP, Fiesta Muda, is their best yet. Gritty. Catchy. Get on board.

Cocofunka draws from a variety of influences (rock, funk, reggae, tropical and more) to craft their wonderful groove. The Costa Rican group is about to release their latest full length record, Chúcaro, and for a taste of what’s to come they offer up a cool video for the title track. It was filmed in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, by the Guatemalan director Giuseppe Badalamenti y viene chúcaro.

Closing us off is another mixtape. This time from Portland, Oregon’s The Incredible Kid whose exclusive mix for El Sonido showcased the songs that inspired his DJ passion for Latin music.

Thanks for listening. See you next time.paz.
