Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “That Certain Flavor” by Pinemen from the 2015 EP, Pleasant Pain, on PNKSLM Recordings.
Pinemen - That Certain Flavor (MP3)
Stockholm band Pinemen started as a DIY duo under the name "Liquid Maze," and have since developed into a four piece. It's a change that's resulted in a fuller sound, but not one that strays from their DIY roots. The band is as equally effective at conjuring up snarling guitar riffs and rumbling bass lines fit for a rowdy garage as they are laid back earworms. Song of the day "That Certain Flavor" finds itself in the latter category and offers the perfect soundtrack for those "having breakfast for lunch." Beachy guitar tones lounge around the laments of that certain flavor, before a guitar solo slithers through the mellow haze. At under 3 minutes long, it's a cruelly short affair that reflects the groups small discography; a similarity that will certainly leave you craving more music from the Swedish band.
Pinemen have no current tour dates lined up, but keep up with the band on their Facebook for possible show announcements. In the meantime, enjoy Pinemen's live rendition of "Give Up Shopping" below:
