On their forthcoming full-length debut, Imaginary People make a very real noise. The NYC five-piece are quick to becoming storied superstars with their unscripted blend of kicking roots rock, moody post punk, synthy electro-pop, and anthemic new wave, which they themselves dubbed "dance Americana" with the release of their previous self-titled EP.
Now with an even more expressive sound, Imaginary People allures on Dead Letterbox through an anguished exuberance, personified mostly by principle asongwriter and vocalist Dylan Von Wagner (whose howls and yelps might remind longtime KEXP listeners of Stellastarr's Shawn Christensen) and built up by the multilayered wall of sound created by his bandmates.
Solidifying their current state, Von Wagner says: “We released an EP last year, played very briefly and put out some singles over the course of a year while we wrote our debut album. I think the fact that we holed up for a while writing helped streamline our relationship as a band, and allowed us to focus on song craft. Right now, we're looking forward to going out on the road to let the animal out of the cage.”
