June’s Community Partnership Benefit Show is on Saturday, June 6th at The Sunset. This month’s show is in support of Futurewise, a group that is working to promote healthy communities and cities while protecting farmland, forests, and shorelines today and for future generations. One could say that they are attempting to take the future of Washington’s growth into their caring hands and helping to shape it into something great!

This month’s benefit concert will showcase Seattle bands: Wimps, Bread & Butter, as well as Portland’s Jackson Boone! We had a little future fun ourselves with a "Cootie Catcher" interview! I was feeling inspired by Futurewise and their ability to think ahead and wanted to hear the band members’ thoughts on all things nature in the Pacific Northwest, music and how they see the future! Be sure to give their music a listen before you head out to the show this weekend! Read about Wimps, Bread & Butter, Jackson Boone, and see snippets from our super cool email-interview below!

  • Cootie Catcher: Futurewise works to protect farms, forests and habitat areas in Washington State. If you could ensure that one area of Washington state would remain completely untouched by human development projects, which spot would you choose?
  • (Mason of) Bread & Butter: I love the rivers in Western Washington. I wish we could just let them run and have trees and lots of space so our gross human biz doesn't mess up the water. And so the floods — which are just going to happen — don't mess up peoples' lives. If we take care of the rivers they'll take care of us. We all [Bread & Butter] go inner tube floating on the Snoqualmie River in the summers... you gotta see our guitar player Lars on the river. He's just so skinny and tall and cool-looking. He's like a pair of sunglasses and shorts. People — complete strangers — just hand him beers. We call him the River God.
  • Wimps: I don't know. But car camping is fun. Especially getting to bring unlimited snacks with you.
  • Cootie Catcher: Do you have a favorite mode of public transportation? What do you enjoy about using that mode?
  • (Mason of) Bread & Butter: Light rail is the bomb. I wish all the new lines were up and running right f'n now. It's faster than driving and it feels like a spaceship. The spaceship vibe is probably what I like best.
  • Cootie Catcher: Have any of your songs been inspired by living in an urban environment — especially one that is (structurally) changing and evolving all of the time?
  • Wimps: In fact, yes. We just wrote a song about Capitol Hill which is about ‘Capitol Hill.’
  • Cootie Catcher: Favorite songs to perform with band? How about while you’re singing karaoke?
  • Jackson Boone: To perform live with my band, "Moonbeam" from my new album Natural Changes. To perform at karaoke, "Real Talk" by R. Kelly.
  • Cootie Catcher: Fill in the blanks: The next time you want to escape from the city you will go to _______ to do ____________.
  • Wimps: Nature; Drinking in nature.
  • Cootie Catcher: You and your bandmates will help Futurewise spread awareness about local solutions to global warming by providing me with three words that you think best describe "global warming".
  • Jackson Boone: Three words for Global Warming: "Scary" "hopefully reversible"
  • Cootie Catcher: If you were to write a song about protecting the Puget Sound — or any other waterways in general — how would the first few lines go?
  • (Mason of) Bread & Butter: ‘Puget Sound, you're so fine. You're so fine you blow my mind. Hey Puget!’ I sorta half assed that last one, but there was just no Bread & Butter way to answer with any seriousness.

Wimps:If you haven’t seen a Wimps show before, you are in for a treat! You’ll surely feel like dancing to their up-tempo, witty punk songs that are all about things us snack-motivated, basement-party-loving Seattle dwellers can relate to. When Wimps virtually sat down with me to complete their part of the Cootie Catcher, fortune-telling interview I had so much fun getting insight to what inspires them, their relationship with nature, and thoughts on development and changes within Seattle. Their video for "Repeat" makes me smile every time! Hope they play all the major hits!

Bread & Butter:Since I’ve yet to catch these hilarious rockers live, I’m definitely looking forward to catching Bread & Butter on Saturday! With catchy melodies, boppy lyrics and jangly style, their laid-back rock ‘n’ roll is something that you can listen to on any given day, and I’m interested to see how their completely goofy and self-assured personalities will come across during their performance on stage!

Jackson Boone:Jackson Boone hails from Oregon and plays some pretty magical indie rock. Drawn to his singer/songwriter style that comes across as psychedelic and dreamy, I quickly found that it can all be credited to JB’s sense of self and surroundings. Many of his songs are about animals and all things atmospheric or natural, so it made me curious to interview him about himself as well as about the concern that Futurewise has for preserving Washington’s natural and uninhabited land. Jackson Boone will be performing at The Sunset on Saturday, and I can’t wait to sway along to his dreamy set!
