It's the most wonderful time of the year: Record Store Day! Now in its eighth year, this annual event to acknowledge your local independent record shop has become a colossal celebration, now organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS) and the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS).
Local luminary Dave Grohl is this year's Record Store Day ambassador. As a child, he found solace digging through the bins in his suburban Virginia neighborhood. "I found my calling in the back bin of a dark, dusty record store," he says, adding, "I believe that the power of the record store to inspire is still alive and well, and that their importance to our next generation of musicians is crucial. Take an afternoon and please support them. You never know, it might change your life forever, too."

Georgetown Records // 1201 S Vale Street:
South of downtown, Georgetown Records teams up with their neighbors Fantagraphics Bookstore for a signing with comic book icon Daniel Clowes at 6:00 PM. Clowes, along with many Fantagraphics artists, has a long history of designing album covers for local label Sub Pop, including the Supersuckers album cover spotlighted above. He'll be in town to sign his brand-new box set The Complete Eightball 1 - 18.
Jive Time Records // 3506 Fremont Ave. North:
Our friends in Fremont will be opening at 10:00 AM for the occasion. All day long, all used records and CDs will be 20% off, with all new vinyl at 10% off. Make a purchase, and you'll also get a special limited-edition, hand-screened “Day of the Record Store” poster, and if you spend $50 or more, you'll get a free t-shirt! Silver Platters // 2930 1st Ave South:
Silver Platters are opening the doors at 9:00 AM, with enticing contests and giveaways. There will be 10% off all regular priced new & used vinyl from 2:00 PM 'til close (not including holds or reserve orders).
Sonic Boom Records // 2209 NW Market Street:
Out in Ballard, the doors at Sonic Boom will burst open at 10:00 AM. The usual rules apply: No holds. No Special Orders. One of each title per customer. No stashing records (you will be asked to leave). Nick Harmer of Death Cab for Cutie and Chris Martin of Kinski will be stopping by to guest DJ while you shop, and there will be great raffle prizes as well. Plus, for every purchase, Sonic Boom will donate $1.00 to the Vera Project, and additional donations will be matched (up to $350 total). Neighborhood burger joint Little Woody's will be serving up the "Sonic Boom Burger," and with your Sonic Boom receipt, you can get discounts at participating businesses in the 'hood.
