Seattle band Shadow may not have reached any sort of fame or success music wise, but it provided a place for Danny Newcomb, Rick and Chris Friel and Mike McCready to hone their craft. They would go on to do great things, and the list of all the classic Seattle projects Shadow members have touched is long and impressive; only topped by the list of bands they have been in (Goodness, Pearl Jam and the Rockfords to name a few). Things have come full circle for the Shadow band members in the form of Danny Newcomb & The Sugar Makers, a group that features Danny Newcomb and the Friel brothers. Released on McCready's label, their new album Masterwish holds a lighter tone than projects of the past. Bright chord progressions and pop hooks dominate the album, offering a different side of the Seattle rock royalty. It is no less compelling than Newcomb and the Friel brothers previous work, as song of the day "Known World" proves. On it the pleasant tones of a pulsing guitar riff compete with the hook in a competition of catchiness, and Newcomb's voice is given plenty of space to soar. It's a masterly crafted rock song that finds Newcomb and the Friel brothers on top of the Seattle music scene once again.
