Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “I've Got Your Fire” by Jenn Grant from the 2013 album The Beautiful Wild on Six Shooter Records.
Jenn Grant - I've Got Your Fire (MP3)
A veteran of the Nova Scotia music scene, Jenn Grant's luminous voice has been soundtracking cold, lamp-lit nights since her 2005 debut. Grant's songwriting catalog is a diverse one, with tinges of folk, country, jazz, and pop all well represented across her four albums, but it's her voice, a cross between Leslie Feist's smokey cool and Neko Case's barroom noir, that sells the whole package. The second single from her fourth album, The Beautiful Wild, "I've Got Your Fire" is an ascending slow burn that floats on Grant's ardent performance. Over cascading piano, warm organ, and a steady beat, Grant spins a tale of weariness and comfort between two people. When she sings "I'll take what your heart can't take", it's not a reassurance, but rather a commitment; to be around through the cold winter before the summer arrives.
Jenn Grant has a series of Canadian shows booked next month, which you can view, along with any future tour information, over at her website and Facebook. Watch the video for "I've Got Your Fire" below.
